Metro Line Section 5

Main Street, West Gray
to UOH Downtown

Scientech was a major team member for this complex project of roadway reconstruction, bridge rehabilitation, utility adjustments/relocation, fiber optic supports, Light Rail stations, etc. in congested Downtown Houston.  Many old infrastructures had to be investigated and retrofitted for new Metro Light Rail pavement and reconstruction.  OCS poles had to be designed sometimes in existing basements of existing buildings.  Short project schedules along with strict construction budgets were among many challenging parts of this project at a construction cost of $25 million of Metro budget and $20 million improvements by Downtown Management District to construct a pool design in middle of rails, other art support structures, etc.

Scientech also performed Historic Main Street Bridge over Buffalo Bayou Rehabilitation/ replacement for Metro Rail, Analysis and redesign of the 100 year old Historical bridge of concrete arches to accommodate new railroad loading, new highway loading and wind loading as well as vibrations.

Half of the bridge deck/beams was demolished and replaced with a new floor system using existing structure of bents/columns and foundation as much as possible.  The other half was retrofitted by encasing columns and adding tie beams to bring it up to today’s code standards.  This challenging project is completed at present.  AREMA loading (Cooper E80) was used.
